Special Winter Edition This was taken a the New Your benefit concert. Just Within Reach Words from Kevin I'I'd like to thank you all for your love and support you've shown our crew and fellow Americans who have suffered a devastating tragedy the last few days. I hope you know that our thoughts and prayers are also with your families and we hope you are safe and well. I want to just take a minute to clarify my views that I shared in a recent interview on Much Music. It's been brought to my attention that my comments have been misunderstood and I just want to make sure that you all realize where I'm coming from. I thought putting it in my own words would be best. When I said that I think our nation is a bit arrogant, what I meant is that as a world Super Power, I think we've become overconfident and taken our opportunities and freedom for granted. I feel like we've taken on the attitude that we, as a country, are untouchable. How did we get that way? I wholeheartedly appreciate the freedom and opportunity we have in the United States. But I think this is a wake up call for us all to take notice that these freedoms are not a given. How many of us have watched the news coverage of terrorism going on in other countries and said, "Oh, how sad," and then just turned the channel? Have we mourned their losses the way they're mourning with us now? I don't know. I also commented on how war is good for the economy. History shows us time and time again that wars do boost economics. But my comment was sarcastic. It bothers me that something as destructive and terrible as war can help build our prosperity. I don't apologize for my comments, but I am sorry my thoughts were incomplete. I didn't intend for them to come across as insensitive. I know how far-reaching this event is. Almost all of us know someone who was directly affected by this disaster. And nobody - nobody - will walk away from this experience unchanged. Regarding the attacks on my patriotism, I believe there are so many other more important things to think about right now, that I don't even want to respond to it. But out of respect for you, I will respond to it just so you're clear about how I feel. It frustrates me that people think that I hate our government. I don't hate anything, I just have strong beliefs for a number of issues and policies and I believe it's important that we always ask questions about the policies that affect us. My dad was a serviceman in the U.S. Army and I myself was enlisted in the Air Force before joining the Backstreet Boys. And so it hurts me that people would think I would betray the American values that were taught to me by my father. I know that we need to defend our freedom and way of life. But I also know that nobody ever really wants war. Thank you for hearing me out. I hope we can all continue to support one another and be strong for each other. I hope that all our families and friends and neighbors will remain safe and free. And I pray that God walks with our leaders and our allies so they make the right decisions for our safety, our future -- for our world. Regarding the passing of my sister, Caroline Cochran." "The outpouring of emotion and sympathy I have received from the fans and the media has been overwhelming. Caroline was only 37 when she lost her battle with the disease called Lupus. This disease effects the immune system, often striking young people like my sister, in their prime." "I would request that instead of sending card and gifts in memory of my sister, a donation could be made to the fund I have established in her name. This donation would help towards the research of Lupus with hope a cure could be found, and no family would have to suffer a loss such as ours." ea on invat lupus at .com This picture was taken the year before they made it big in the U.S. JNN Foundation AJs Angels I am looking for anyone interested in setting aside some time, creativity, and anything else we realize we might need to help the MFC raise money for the JNN Foundation. As some of you may or may not know, I have headed up the MFC charity efforts on behalf of AJ McLean for the past 2 years, and I'm looking forward to making the 3rd year our most successful project to date. The JNN Foundation, which was launched in May 2001, will be working in conjunction AJ McLean to help raise money for VH1 Save the Music, and the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. As of right now, I am looking for people who really want to get more involved to work on AJs birthday project. In the future the committee may work on interim project to help the foundation, but that is yet to be determined. Healthy Heart Club for Kids Statement: "Brian was born with a Ventricular Septal Defect, a small hole between the left and right ventricles of the heart. 18 years later Brian faced surgery to repair the hole in his heart. Prior to the surgery, Brian and his family came to Saint Joseph Hospital to express their desire to establish a fund that would help children with heart problems. The Brian Littrell Healthy Heart Fund for Kids was created at the Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation, Inc. Brian expressed to his fans worldwide his desire that they might show their concern for him at the time of his surgery by means of gifts to this newly established fund...". Nick Carters Oceans Campaign Thank you for your interest in Nick Carter and the preservation of the world's oceans. As you know, Nick's charity funds will go to support various oceanic causes - we call this support program "Nick Carter's Oceans Campaign." Rather than an organization or a foundation, a Campaign is a "game plan" for activating people to support and/or oppose a series of specific ocean issues. Nick plans to learn about different ocean-based issues and use his position as a well-known entertainer to speak out and gain attention for those issues so more people become aware and take action. For example, Nick recently made a statement about the Navy's plan to conduct sonar testing and how it would negatively impact the world's whale population. By his sharing that information, many of you joined in the cause and signed the NRDC's petition to the National Marine Fisheries Service to stop the sonar testing. If we all work together, to make our opinions known, we can stop environmentally harmful things from destroying our oceans and marine life. In addition to his issues-based statements, Nick will support oceanic education and outreach. "What can I do to help Nick protect the oceans and the animals that live there?" The best way for you to help Nick is to get educated and start making noise!!! Read, read and read some more! Learn all you can about current ocean issues and get your friends and family to help you speak on behalf of the sea and its creatures, who can't speak for themselves. There is so much you can do all on your own! Surf the Internet and learn all you can about current oceanic issues Visit the Web sites of organizations that already do great work on behalf of the oceans and their inhabitants Become a member of ocean-supporting organizations and volunteer for their projects Write to your Congressperson and Senator and make your views and opinions known Encourage registered voters to support policies that promote the health of the oceans and waterways Write letters to the editor of your local newspaper to share your concerns with others in your community Post your concerns and what you're doing to help improve things on Web sites and message boards connected to Nick Carter, BSB and related groups. Spread the word through online email lists, chats groups and clubs. For those who want to raise money for the cause, you can hold local fundraisers on behalf of Nick's campaign. Kids, always make sure your fundraisers are legal and approved and supervised by your parents! Some Current Ocean Issues Navy sonar testing and its effects on marine mammals like whales and dolphins Factory trawlers that "clear-cut" the ocean bottom by dragging huge nets along the seafloor, destroying everything in their paths. These nets not only capture the fish they are harvesting, but all the coral, rocks, grasses and other organisms necessary to support sea life. They turn thriving ocean floors into underwater deserts. Killing of whales by many countries for commercial use Off-shore drilling for oil and natural gas Pollution from rivers loaded with city and agricultural wastes. This pollution causes dead zones in ocean waters where fish and other animals have almost disappeared. One dead zone exists in the Gulf of Mexico at the mouth of the Mississippi River. Beaches littered with garbage and medical waste Sewer and storm drain runoff from cities that make it unsafe to swim and surf Kevin and Nick relaxing Time to say bye bye This ha been a very special issue of The Beat On Backstreet. I hope you take action in you own communities to the world a better place.
